Emerald News:- Washington: The 2026 US midterm elections have marked a historic milestone for women’s representation in American politics, with Democratic women achieving significant gains across federal and state-level positions.
Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton highlighted these achievements, noting that for the first time in history, more than 100 Democratic women will serve in the US House of Representatives. At least 16 Democratic women are also set to serve in the Senate, while at least 14 Democratic women will serve as governors, marking a record high.
Several women have made history through their electoral victories. Keisha Bottoms is set to become the first Black woman to serve as a governor. Deb Haaland will become the first Native American woman governor, while Gina Hinojosa is set to become the first Latina governor of Texas. Peggy Flanagan will make history as the first Native American woman to serve in the US Senate.
Clinton also highlighted the participation of a record 2,600 Democratic women candidates in state legislative elections, which helped flip 12 majorities and break 11 supermajorities.
Congratulating all the candidates, Clinton expressed hope that the newly elected leaders would work on key issues, including accountability and affordability, and help improve the lives of people across the country.
She also acknowledged candidates who did not win, stating that standing up and fighting for what is right is always worthwhile.
